Sông2Sea’s Statement on Palestine for Community Sign On

We the undersigned, organizations and people living in the United States—particularly those of us with a shared history of French colonization and U.S. imperialist warfare in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia—unequivocally stand with Palestinians fighting for liberation. 

Tracing our own history, we see clearly the same colonial and imperialist playbook used on our homelands being used on Palestine: the division of territories and peoples, military occupation, bombing, and spraying of toxic chemicals. We see what Nick Turse, author of Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam, calls “the stunning scale of civilian suffering.”

January 2024 data from Gaza shows that within 113 days, Israel’s attacks have killed over 26,000 people, injured more than 65,000, and destroyed:

  • 360,000 residential units, more than half of Gaza’s homes

  • 378 educational facilities

  • 122 ambulances

  • 221 places of worship

  • 20 hospitals 

On Super Bowl Sunday in the U.S., Israel bombed Rafah refugee camp—where over one million Palestinians have fled from other parts of Gaza—killing at least 67 people.

By the time you read this, the death toll and destruction will undoubtedly have increased.

The scale of brutality and destruction echoes what Nick Turse described in Vietnam:

Murder, torture, rape, abuse, forced displacement, home burnings, specious arrests, imprisonment without due process—such occurrences were virtually a daily fact of life throughout the years of the American presence in Vietnam… they were the inevitable outcome of deliberate policies, dictated at the highest levels of the military.

It is the deliberate policies at the highest levels that need to change, and it’s where we direct our demands for real, lasting peace in Palestine today. 

We urge the U.S. not to repeat its catastrophic decisions in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia and to stop the military buildup that would turn into a regional war in West Asia. 

We uplift the following demands of the people in Gaza and across occupied Palestine, as put forth by the Palestinian Youth Movement:

1. An immediate end of the siege on Gaza. A ceasefire must include the lifting of Israel’s siege, so Gaza can be rebuilt, and allow for food, medicine, fuel, building supplies, and economic goods to move freely between Gaza and the outside world.

2. Release all Palestinian prisoners from Zionist jails. Palestinian prisoners are held without trial or charge for many months or years and face routine torture and denial of medical care and family visits. Without the release of these prisoners, a lasting ceasefire is untenable.

3. An end to the 76-year occupation and settler-colonization of Palestine. An end to the military occupation and the apartheid regime of Zionism is the precondition for peace in Palestine.

4. An end to Western complicity in Israel's apartheid against Palestinians. The U.S. provides $3.3 billion in aid to Israel annually and leads other Western governments in providing unwavering support for Israel to continue its genocide of Palestinians. Ending the violence means ending Western complicity in it. 

For those of us in the diaspora, we may have migrated to the U.S. through different paths. Yet in our attempts to integrate or assimilate, often for survival, we may have internalized the fraudulent and deceptive ideas of the American Dream, of pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps, and of the U.S. as a bastion of democracy, freedom, and human rights.

A closer examination tells us otherwise.

For example, the U.S. vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza in December 2023. On January 26, 2024, the same day that the International Court of Justice at The Hague (ICJ) ordered Israel to stop its acts of genocide in Gaza, the U.S., along with other allied nations, announced they would stop funding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), cutting off critical food and medicine to about 2 million people in Gaza.

Now is the time to divest from the myths of American exceptionalism and gain political clarity and courage.

We are not alone. More and more diasporic Asians are starting to understand U.S. imperialism as the root cause of our displacement and forced migration. 

More are speaking out in solidarity with Palestine, including organizations such as the Asian American Advocacy Fund, Asian American Resource Workshop, 18 Million Rising, AsianCrit Collective, Boston South Asian Coalition, Lao Youth For Revolution, Nodutdol, Southeast Asian Freedom Network, and VietLead, to name just a few.

Palestinian journalist Wael Al-Dahdouh denounced the global silence and inaction: “We feel that we are being killed twice: once by the bombs and once by this silence.” In Beyond Vietnam — A Time to Break Silence, Dr. King correctly pointed out that the U.S. is “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today,” and concluded, “for the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent.” 

We call on our community members and fellow diaspora to speak up and take action for the liberation of Palestine together.

Imperialism has laid its body over the world, the head in Eastern Asia, the heart in the Middle East, its arteries reaching Africa and Latin America. Wherever you strike it, you damage it, and you serve the World Revolution… The Palestinian cause is not a cause for Palestinians only, but a cause for every revolutionary, wherever he is, as a cause of the exploited and oppressed masses in our era.

We end with this quote by Palestinian author and revolutionary Ghassan Kanafani—a reminder of what solidarity with Palestine means—as we hope to connect, develop relationships, and engage in partnership with many who share the same vision. There are many struggles on multiple fronts; let’s stay steadfast in fostering the discipline to organize and build with each other.

Chúng tôi, các tổ chức và người dân sống ở Mỹ—đặc biệt là những người có chung một lịch sử dưới thời kỳ thuộc địa Pháp và chiến tranh của Mỹ ở Lào, Việt Nam và Campuchia— hoàn toàn ủng hộ nỗ lực đấu tranh giải phóng của người Palestine.

Chúng tôi ủng hộ những yêu cầu sau đây của người dân ở Gaza và khắp vùng Palestine đang bị chiếm đóng, như Phong trào Thanh niên Palestine đưa ra:

  1. Chấm dứt bao vây Gaza ngay lập tức. Lệnh ngừng bắn phải bao gồm việc dỡ bỏ vòng vây của Israel để Gaza có thể được xây dựng lại và cho phép thực phẩm, thuốc men, nhiên liệu, vật tư xây dựng và hàng hóa kinh tế được tự do di chuyển từ thế giới bên ngoài và Gaza.

  2. Thả tất cả tù nhân người Palestine khỏi các nhà tù theo Chủ Nghĩa Zion. Các tù nhân người Palestine đang bị giam giữ khi không có cáo buộc hoặc không được xét xử theo phép lý trong nhiều tháng hoặc nhiều năm; đồng thời họ phải thường xuyên chịu sự tra tấn và bị từ chối chăm sóc y tế cũng như không được gia đình thăm viếng. Nếu không thả những tù nhân này, một lệnh ngừng bắn lâu dài là vô hiệu lực.

  3. Chấm dứt 76 năm chiếm đóng và tình trạng thực dân định cư (settler-colonization) ở Palestine. Việc chấm dứt sự chiếm đóng quân sự và chế độ phân biệt chủng tộc của Chủ Nghĩa Zion là điều kiện tiên quyết cho hòa bình ở Palestine.

  4. Các nước phương Tây phải chấm dứt ủng hộ nỗ lực hình thành chế độ phân biệt chủng tộc chống lại người Palestine từ phía Israel. Mỹ cung cấp 3,3 tỷ USD tiền viện trợ hàng năm cho Israel và là chính phủ phương Tây đứng đầu trong việc không ngừng hỗ trợ Israel tiếp tục nạn diệt chủng người Palestine. Chấm dứt bạo lực có nghĩa là chấm dứt sự đồng lõa của phương Tây với bạo lực.

Chúng tôi kêu gọi các thành viên trong cộng đồng của chúng tôi và cộng đồng hải ngoại cùng nhau lên tiếng và hành động để giải phóng Palestine.
